The gun battery from above. Carlisle Castle.
The half-moon gun battery outside the inner gatehouse from above.
The battery was designed by Stefan von Haschenperg around 1542.
It used to be a more formidable defense but repair work carried out
in 1826-7 reduced it in size. One of the two entrances can be seen
disappearing into the stonework.
